Water Pollution Prevention Workshop

Students & Teachers! Do you know what a watershed is? ....Or that you currently live in one? Have you ever felt like watershed issues are complex and difficult to grasp? Does the size of your watershed inhibit you from taking action to improve it?
Elementary Teacher Institutes 2011

The Monterey Bay Aquarium will be hosting two elementary institutes for teams of full-time classroom teachers this summer. These free, grade-specific, week-long professional development opportunities use activities that are aligned with national and California state science content standards, as well as Ocean Literacy principles.
Get your hands wet and catch the excitement of ocean technology! Earn a stipend while visiting research labs and using sampling equipment!

Two are right around the corner:
We'll have some great low tides in the next few weeks to explore the rocky shores. March 5th is our Tidepools for Teachers workshop where participants will learn about the biodiversity and adaptations found in our rocky intertidal zone, then explore our natural tidepools at Point Fermin State Marine Park.

On March 19th, teachers will get a chance to participate in our Peninsula Shorewatch workshop where we'll learn about field research methods and get wet as we conduct a quadrat study at Portugeuse Bend.
Algalita Marine Research Foundation- Ship-2-Shore Education Program

Join us online for a voyage across the South Pacific Ocean! Valdivia, Chile to Easter Island - March 2011
Scripps Institution of Oceanography

Scripps Institution of Oceanography at UC San Diego is inviting questions from kindergarten-through-12th grade students for the Voyager for Kids section of our magazine explorations. Selected questions will be put to the researchers that we'll be profiling in our next feature.
Young Scientists Symposium on Sunday, April 17, 2011

In 2009-2010 research projects, seven student researchers tested environmental variables that cause the polyps to begin stobilating. These variables include species competition, water temperature, and light type. Polyps were put into different water temperatures (39°F, 55°F, and 72°F). Want to read more....

Target Science/STEM December 15 LA River Seminar
Here is a great opportunity to join fellow educators for an evening of River Talk with Target Science. We have special guests from partnering institutions to share their work with the LA River. We will share ways for teachers to get their students involved in real scientific research that will be used by the City of LA and the State on water quality. A great focus for your students, especially for environmentally-based SLCs. and AP Environmental Science classes.
When: Dec. 15, 4:30-7:30 pm
(Food will be provided!)
Where: LA River Center
570 W. Avenue 26, Suite 250
Los Angeles, CA 90065
323-223-0585
All teachers K-12 are invited. Although geared towards science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) all disciplines will be addressed. Please see the attached and register ASAP.
We will be having our LA River Field Investigation to teach you how to monitor water quality on the LA River and develop interdisciplinary links on January 15. Watch for upcoming flyers.
Hope to see you soon.
