LAUSD Mission

The mission of the Los Angeles Unified School District is to educate all students to a high level of achievement that will enable them to be responsible individuals and productive members of the greater society.

LAUSD Vision

The Los Angeles Unified School District will be known as one of the best urban school districts in this country. We will offer a stellar education to every student within a safe and caring environment. We will be among the first major urban districts to eliminate the achievement gap among all subgroups of our student population. We will dynamically engage parents and the community in the lives of our schools. The District’s schools will be the first and best choice of families in the Los Angeles area.

LAUSD Guiding Principles

* Children always come first in our District.
* All students will learn to high levels, maximizing their highest potential.
* All students will have a safe and healthy learning environment.
* Every school will have competent, well-prepared teachers in each classroom and a highly qualified principal as its instructional leader.
* The District will engage parents and community as critical and necessary partners in the success of our students.

LAUSD Goal

By 2015, the Los Angeles Unified School District will be one of the top urban districts in the state and nation by (1) eliminating the achievement gap for all student subgroups, (2) securing a seat for every child, (3) increasing the high school graduation rate, and (4) providing a modern and safe learning environment.

Indicators of Progress

The Board of Education of the Los Angeles Unified School District will measure its progress annually towards achieving its four-part goal using the following indicators:

* Eliminating the achievement gap
o The NAEP (National Assessment of Educational Progress) scores for 4th and 8th graders, and secondary school students
o The District’s performance scores on the California API* (Academic Performance Index), including California High School Exit Exam*
o California Standards Tests*
o Changes in the Advanced Placement (AP) passing rate and participation rate*
o SAT and ACT scores and participation rates
o Attendance rates for students and District employees
o Changes in percentage of enrollment in private schools, public schools, and charter schools
o The CELDT (California English Language Development Test) scores and re-designation rates
o Special Education achievement data
o The percentage of high school graduates going to college and university, percentage of students going to advanced career and technical schools
* Securing a seat for every child
o Changes in the number of new home school seats for students, number of cap students in the district; and number of new schools opened
* Increasing the high school graduation rate
o The District’s high school graduation rate*
* Providing a modern and safe learning environment
o The number and percentage of student suspensions and expulsions as reported in the District’s annual safety data*

*NOTE: All test scores and other relevant information will be reported to the Board of Education disaggregated by sub groups in order to determine the rate of progress in closing the achievement gap.
